A free metronome with MIDI control

Tired of online metronomes that deafen you with no volume control, or that lack subdivisions? This metronome allows a wide range of BPM (20-300) complete with optional subdivisions, accents, and independent volume control. No adverts, no login.

Triplets and subdivisions

Add subdivisions between the beats: eighth notes, triplets, sixteenths, quintuplets, sextuplets, septuplets or 32nd notes. Subdivision clicks are quieter and lower-pitched, and have their own volume slider, so the main beat stays clear.

Swing and shuffle

Add swing to even subdivisions to lengthen the first note of each pair: around 66% is classic triplet swing and 75% is a harder, dotted feel. For a shuffle, pick triplets and switch the middle click off, which leaves the long-short pattern. You can switch any subdivision click on or off to build your own pattern, and muted beats are silent rests, subdivisions included.

Time signatures and compound meters

Choose any time signature from 1 to 16 beats over a half, quarter, eighth or sixteenth note. Presets cover 4/4, 3/4, 2/4, 2/2, 5/4, 5/8, 7/8 (2+2+3), 6/8, 9/8 and 12/8. Grouping accents the start of each group, so 6/8 is felt as two groups of three and 7/8 as 2+2+3. For compound meters you can set the BPM to count the dotted note (for example a dotted quarter in 6/8) instead of every eighth note.

Control it from a MIDI keyboard or controller

Click Enable MIDI, then use Learn next to an action and press a pad, button or knob. You can map start/stop, tap tempo, BPM up and down, a BPM knob, a volume knob, beats per bar and the next subdivision. Nothing is mapped by default, so playing notes does nothing. MIDI works in browsers that support Web MIDI, such as Chrome, Edge and Firefox.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with my MIDI keyboard?

Any class-compliant USB MIDI controller that your browser can see should work. Another program may hold the device exclusively, so if it isn't listed, close the other program and reload.

How do I play triplets?

Choose Triplets (3) in the Subdivision menu. Each beat is split into three even clicks.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, the metronome itself works on phones and tablets, and keeps the screen on while it is running (where the browser allows it). If you hear nothing on an iPhone, check the ring/silent switch. MIDI control depends on the browser supporting Web MIDI, which Safari (including on iPhone) does not.
